We recently sat down with Jean Foster, Chief Operations Officer of California Miramar University, to learn about the university and its mission to make education a realistic possibility for as many people as possible.
Why did you decide to start up your own university?
Jean Foster: We started California Miramar University in order to give people an opportunity to get a quality higher education by making it more affordable. Our mission statement is Educating Tomorrows Business Leaders Today. Our diverse student body comes from all across America and around the globe. Many of our students are also active duty service members or veterans from all branches of the U.S. military.
Can you describe California Miramar University to us?
Jean Foster: California Miramar offers truly affordable higher education. Business, management, strategic leadership, public administration and strategic management degrees are offered 100% online and Hybrid on our San Diego campus. We also offer certificate programs in ESL and Hospitality Management.
How did you end up finding your niche?
Jean Foster: We believe that a blend of domestic students and international students will be our niche. Since we have just received our ability to issue international student visas for students across the world, we are still waiting to find the perfect formula that will allow us to grow and become the institution that we want to be.
Tell us about your background, and the steps you took to acquire the skills necessary to run this kind of business.
Jean Foster: I have been involved in the world of postsecondary education since 1979. I have run a number of departments including marketing and advertising, student services, finance and student grants and loans. I began this kind of work at a young age. My experience is a blend of academic and on the job learning. I engage in continuing education and training both on an industry wide level, as well as governmental and other forms of training that is specific to our accreditation agencies.
What is the biggest challenge in running the university?
Jean Foster: There are over 400 schools in the United States that offer MBA programs. Since we operate off revenue and not outside investors, we do not have the financial capital to spend on expensive marketing. The biggest challenge has been getting the word out about our unique offering of affordable MBA programs with a dedicated faculty and small classes. Word out mouth is our best source of new students so far. We know that with time, our happy students and alumni will share the “best kept secret in higher education: CMU,” with their friends and colleagues and one day California Miramar University will no longer be a secret.
Jean Foster has been working with the administrative staff as COO of California Miramar University since 2006. Those who want to know more about the university and what it offers are encouraged to visit online at www.calmu.edu More. Helpful info also found here. Reference links.
